TSC Bill Coon Civic Soccer Award

The TSC Civic Soccer Award is awarded to a high school senior candidate who gives back to the Trumansburg soccer community by helping spread the 'joy of the game' to the next generation of players, referees and community at large. The candidate exemplifies the spirit of the mission of the Taughannock Soccer Club: They not only play, but help coach the technical and tactical skills of soccer in a variety of youth programs, and encourage their players with the virtues of hard work, teamwork, respect for referees and opponents, and, above all, good sportsmanship.

Bill Coon

Bill was involved with the club since its inception in 2003. With no previous soccer experience, Bill volunteered to join the TSC board and help provide support when his children played with the new club.  Bill served continuously for 10 years, through lean times and times of great local soccer interest. Bill provided the strong foundation and unwavering commitment to our local club that ensures our local soccer programs exists for our youth today.

He kept the local club alive, serving even when a scarcity of volunteers made the club’s future uncertain.  Bill was very thorough in his leadership.  He carefully tended the club assets, working to grow our funds to someday allow us to build and maintain our own fields. He was relentless in his efforts to support and expand our club, recruiting coaches and board members, scheduling and maintaining fields and equipment, as well as working directly with young players on both the travel programs and recreational programs. Without plentiful coaches and volunteers, Bill recruited local high school players to assist in the recreational program and travel teams. This effort not only provided an opportunity for teen players to share their skills with younger players, but offered role-models for those young players to aspire to.

Bill started playing the game as an adult, acquiring skills in order to coach his own boy’s teams. When his boys moved on to school-based programs, Bill continued to share his knowledge and enjoyment of the game with other youth through the community recreational program. He was a wonderful coach-- directive, but unassuming, and especially cognizant of the different personalities of the players and of team-building, ensuring that all players felt valued on the field.

Bill epitomized the ideal of community soccer-- striving to ensure multiple opportunities to play in our community for any interested youngster, regardless of experience, skill, or ability to pay the registration fees.

Bill had such a strong commitment to providing soccer opportunities for our community that he even started an adult recreational program which included a beginners’ session for parents wanting to learn the skills needed to enjoy the game with their children.

Throughout his tenure with the Taughannock Soccer Club, Bill exemplified the principles of sportsmanship, inclusion, and enjoyment of the game. His dedication to the Taughannock Soccer Club has introduced the love of soccer to literally thousands of youth players (and adults) during his tenure.

Bill Coon, who passed away on July 18, 2020.  We will be renaming our current TSC Civic Soccer Award “The TSC Bill Coon Civic Soccer Award” in remembrance of Bill’s immense value to the club and community and an illustration of what commitment and engagement looks like.

We gratefully acknowledge Bill’s dedication to the Trumansburg Community and all he was able to do to bring the love of the beautiful game to our area. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Lori, and sons Brandon, Colin, and Aidan, and his extended family. Bill be always be considered a fundamental part of the history of soccer in Trumansburg.
